You probably haven’t looked at your website in months.

That’s not a criticism, it’s just how it goes. You launched it, it looked great, and then life took over. Clients, projects, the actual business of running your business, especially here in Kitchener-Waterloo where the local market moves fast and competition for the same customers keeps growing. The website became something you check every few months, mostly to make sure it hasn’t broken.

But “hasn’t broken” and “working” are two very different things.

A website can load fine, look fine, and still be quietly costing you business every single day. No error messages. No broken links. Just a slow, invisible leak of visitors who showed up, looked around, and left without ever becoming a lead, often to a competitor down the street with a site that does a better job of earning their trust.

Here are five signs that might be happening to yours.

1. You can’t remember the last time someone said “I found you on Google”

Think back. When’s the last time a new customer told you they found you through a search, not a referral, not word of mouth, but an actual Google search for what you do, in Kitchener, Waterloo, or Cambridge?

If you’re drawing a blank, that’s worth paying attention to. Most business owners assume they show up when someone searches for their services in their city, because why wouldn’t they? They have a website. It has all their services listed on it. Surely Google knows they exist.

But ranking isn’t automatic, and it isn’t permanent, especially in a growing market like Kitchener-Waterloo, where new competitors are launching websites and actively investing in local SEO every month. The businesses winning those searches right now are the ones actively managing their SEO, not the ones who set it and forgot it three years ago. If you don’t actually know where you rank for your own core services, in your own city, there’s a good chance the answer isn’t good news, and that’s the entire top of your funnel sitting untapped.

2. You’ve never checked your own site on your phone

Be honest. When’s the last time you pulled up your website on your actual phone, not your laptop, and used it the way a real visitor would?

This matters more than almost anything else on this list, because the majority of your traffic is almost certainly mobile. Depending on your industry, that can be well over half of everyone who ever lands on your site. If your mobile experience is even slightly clunky, buttons too small to tap accurately, text that requires zooming, a phone number that’s three taps deep instead of one, you’re not losing a few visitors. You’re losing the majority of the people who ever see your site in the first place.

The frustrating part is how easy this is to miss. Everything looks perfect on your desktop monitor while you’re building or reviewing the site, because that’s the view you’re always looking at. Meanwhile, most of your actual customers never see that view at all.

3. Nothing on your homepage proves your business is legit

Picture a stranger landing on your homepage for the first time. They don’t know you, they don’t know your reputation in the community, and they’ve never heard a single person vouch for you. All they have is what’s in front of them, right now, in the first few seconds.

If there’s no review, no client name, no result, no number, nothing that signals “real business, real results,” that stranger has no reason to trust you over the next option they click on. Confidence and trust aren’t things you can just claim in your own copy, “trusted,” “reliable,” “experienced” are words every competitor uses too, and they’ve stopped meaning much of anything. What actually moves people is proof. A specific result. A real name. Evidence that other people took the risk before them and it worked out.

If your homepage is all claims and no proof, you’re asking visitors to take your word for it. Most of them won’t.

4. There’s no way to capture a lead who isn’t ready to buy today

Here’s something most websites get wrong: they’re built entirely around visitors who are ready to act right now. Call now. Book now. Get a quote now.

But most people don’t buy the first time they land on a website. They’re researching, comparing, thinking it over, maybe not even ready to make a decision for weeks. If the only option your site gives them is “contact us immediately,” you’ve built a site that only works for a small slice of your actual traffic, and everyone else just leaves with no way for you to stay in touch.

An email signup, a helpful guide, a simple next step that doesn’t require a phone call, these give the undecided majority a low-pressure way to stay connected until they are ready. Without that, you’re not just losing a sale today. You’re losing the ability to ever reach that person again.

5. Nobody’s ever told you what’s actually broken

This might be the biggest one. Most business owners are flying blind when it comes to their own website. They know it exists, they know roughly what’s on it, but they’ve never had anyone, a real second opinion or an actual measurement, tell them specifically what’s working and what isn’t.

That means every decision about the site becomes a guess. Maybe it’s the design. Maybe it’s the copy. Maybe it’s something technical you wouldn’t even know to look for. Without real information, you’re stuck either doing nothing, or throwing money at a redesign that might not even fix the actual problem.

So, how does your website actually score?

We built a free tool to answer exactly that question: the Website Growth Score.

It’s 10 quick questions, about 3 minutes, no call required, no sales pitch. At the end, you get a score out of 100, broken down across the five areas that actually determine whether a website converts: first impressions, mobile experience, trust, SEO, and lead generation. No guessing. No vague advice. Just a clear, honest look at where your site actually stands, built specifically with Kitchener-Waterloo business owners in mind.
