If your business is not showing up on Google, there’s almost always a specific, findable reason, and most of them are fixable without starting over. The frustrating part is that “I can’t find my business” covers several different problems, each with a different fix. The first job is figuring out which one is actually yours, because the cure for an unverified profile is nothing like the cure for being outranked by stronger competitors.
Let’s diagnose it step by step. If you’d rather have someone sort it out, untangling this is a routine part of what our digital marketing team does for local businesses.
First, how are you searching?
One common false alarm: you search your own business name plus your city and panic when you don’t see yourself, but you’re logged in, in a different location, or Google is personalizing results. Try searching in a private or incognito window, and ideally from a different network. Searching your exact business name should reliably surface you. If it doesn’t even then, you likely have a profile problem rather than a ranking problem.
Reason 1: Your profile isn’t verified or doesn’t exist
If you never claimed and verified a Google Business Profile, or verification lapsed, you won’t appear in the map results at all. This is the most common cause for newer businesses. The fix is to claim and verify the listing, then complete it fully. Our profile setup checklist walks through the whole process from claiming to optimizing.
Reason 2: Your profile is suspended
Google suspends profiles that break its rules, sometimes for things owners didn’t realize were problems: keyword-stuffed business names, an address that doesn’t match your real operations, or sudden major edits. A suspended profile vanishes from search. If this is you, you’ll usually have a notice in your dashboard, and the path forward is to fix the violation and request reinstatement.
Reason 3: You’re ranking, just not high enough
Sometimes you do appear, but buried on page two or below the businesses in the map pack, so it feels like you’re invisible. This isn’t a visibility problem, it’s a ranking one, and it’s the most common situation for established businesses. The fix is the steady local SEO work: reviews, profile completeness, consistent details, and relevant website content. Our guide on getting into the map pack covers what moves you up.

Reason 4: Inconsistent or wrong information
If your name, address, and phone number differ across your website, your profile, and various directories, Google may struggle to trust which is correct, and that uncertainty can suppress you. Audit your details everywhere they appear and make them identical. This is foundational, and we explain why in our local SEO guide.
Reason 5: Your website has technical issues
For the regular (non-map) results, your website needs to be crawlable and indexed. If it’s brand new, blocking search engines, or has technical problems, it won’t appear no matter how good the content is. You can check whether Google has indexed your site by searching “site:yourdomain.com.” If nothing comes up, that’s your lead.
Work through it in order
Start with how you’re searching, then check verification and suspension, then look at ranking, consistency, and technical health. Nine times out of ten, the cause sits in that list. The fixes range from a five-minute profile edit to a longer ranking effort, but knowing which problem you have saves you from pouring effort into the wrong one.
